Trolling/ cyber-bullying: When an individual/ company is persistently targeted in a negative way online, usually through social media channels.
The number of social media platforms available has led to a proliferation in this, as has the fact that users enjoy a degree of anonymity when posting via social media sites.
Troll example: Nimrod Severn (investigated by Panorama)
Trolling dead people/ R.I.P messages- trying to upset mourning people
These messages are often racist and potentially illegal
Case study: Ariana Grande
After Ariana split with Mac Miller, he died due to a drug overdose. Ariana was trolled online and had to disable her comments for some time as it was too much.
Cyberbullying: when an individual is targeted online through hurtful or threatening messages, generally online.

Body image, connotations and interpretations
Khloe Kardashian edits her Instagram photos, after an intense and obvious edit fans began roasting her leading to her turning her comments off. (march 2019)
Negative body image:
Obsessing over others' photos can lead to negative self-worth despite the knowledge of knowing these image are excessively photoshopped.
Jenna Ortega
This is one of her more 'natural' and 'casual' photos where it's unlikely she photoshopped the image but perhaps used the 'retouch' app to make small tweaks to her face in order to present herself in a more appealing way for her followers. In this photo, Jenna is more dressed up and wears more makeup than her other photos to promote the clothes and bags which appear in the image. Interestingly, this is appropriate for her followers as they would be interested in the same things as her.
- Negativity around body image and look- unhealthy for followers
- Age filter- people lie to create accounts, so young audiences look at inappropriate images and believe this is normal
- Makes people think they need to look like celebrities who have more access to professional images- can't afford this
- Negativity for the brand being advertised by influencer
- The danger is the way the trend has been normalised and taken ordinary people further away from their own reality- also proven to lead to mental health issues.
One way in which brands receive negative comments is through memes.
A case of cultural appropriations- the nature of the backlash
The things at the top are a luxury- PRIVILEGE
One criticism of globalisation is that it leads to imperialism- that is, the way in which predominantly Western popular culture is promoted to less developed countries. This may, in turn, lead to the gradual erosion of those less developed countries.
The cultures might be changed and worn away due to influences from other countries seen in the media e.g. America
Disney is seen as an example of this. Disney is a large company in less developed countries which reduces the success of local entertainment companies.
